Construction on the Austin's Playroom at the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD is nearly complete. The dedication ceremony is set for this fall.
Thanks to the Mario Lemieux Foundation, childcare will not be a concern for Wounded Warriors receiving world-class care at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that is scheduled to open September 2011.
The new Wounded Warrior barracks, Building 62, will contain an “Austin’s Playroom,” a drop-in child activity center that will provide certified childcare providers for not only those staying in the barracks, but to personnel in need of temporary child care while they’re on medical appointments.
The 2,000 sq.ft. Austin’s Playroom will accommodate children from six weeks to 12 years of age and feature amenities such as a computer kiosk, art station, and imaginative play area.
Since 2000, Austin’s Playroom Project has established 20 playrooms throughout western Pennsylvania with five additional rooms pending, including the playroom at the new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The mission of Austin’s Playroom Project is to benefit families and improve the quality of a child’s hospital experience whether as a visitor or patient by furnishing cheerful playrooms and creating a positive environment.
