Celebrating the Life of Dr. King

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., born Jan. 15, 1929, concentrated his efforts to the Civil Rights Movement . His many lifetime achievements have made great impacts on American history.

Throughout the month of January, the U.S. Army celebrates the life of Dr. King and the contributions he made in his march to bring about diversity and equality in America. Visit the Pentagon Channel throughout the day to view the Department of Defense’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. observance celebration.

This year, my celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an individual and reflective event. I printed Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, as well as his letter he wrote from a Birmingham jail, and read them quietly as I sat on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

I reflected on the determination of the multi-ethnic Americans who unified in support of Dr. King’s vision. I thought about how his vision for the United States to embrace freedom, justice, opportunity, and equality for all Americans remains a platform for change in multicultural America today. I also reflected on the courage and sacrifices made by those who demonstrated, defended themselves, fought, were incarcerated, and/or died as agents of change, and pondered the future of balancing freedom, justice, opportunity, and equality in an increasingly diversified society.

I am proud that Americans celebrate Dr. King and his legacy, and I feel proud to be an American.
