West Point welcomes new superintendent

Yesterday, Lt. Gen. David H. Huntoon Jr. became the 58th Superintendent of West Point during a change of command ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy. The ceremony was met with a little bit of rain, but that did little to dampen the spirits of West Point’s newest superintendent.

Lt. Gen. David H. Huntoon Jr., 58th Superintendent of U.S. Military Academy, receives the unit's colors from the Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen. George W. Casey Jr., as part of the change of command ceremony at West Point, N.Y., July 19, 2010.

Lt. Gen Huntoon assumed command from Lt. Gen. Franklin L. “Buster” Hagenbeck who is scheduled to retire from the U.S. Army after serving for almost 40 years.

Gen. George W. Casey Jr., Army Chief of Staff was on hand for the ceremony and voiced his confidence in Lt. Gen Huntoon.

“I can think of no one who is more qualified to lead this installation,” Casey said.

“For so many, this historic place has marked the start of our journey and service to the U.S. Army and to the nation,” Huntoonsaid. “To return here four decades after my own swearing in ceremony as a new cadet is deeply moving and profoundly inspiring. I’m recommitted to that oath and recommitted to the values of this institution.”
