An Honor Well Deserved

“These men might be a little bit older, a little bit grayer. But make no mistake — these soldiers define the meaning of bravery and heroism.” President Obama during the Presidential Unit Citation Award Ceremony.

After awarding his first Medal of Honor last month to the family of SFC. Jared Monti, President Obama had the privilege of presenting another prestigious honor to men whom exemplified courage and valor in a time of battle.

The Presidential Unit Citation was awarded yesterday at a White House Ceremony to current and former members of the Alpha Troop of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment for rescuing a trapped fellow platoon during the Vietnam War.

Their heroic actions took place in March 26, 1970 when they came to the aid of Soldiers from Charlie Company, 1st Calvary Division, who were facing more than 400 enemy fighters.

The Presidential Unit Citation is awarded for “gallantry, determination, and esprit de corps in accomplishing its mission under extremely difficult and hazardous conditions.” Since its creation during the Second World War, it has only been awarded about 100 times.
